The art of getting out of bed on time, fresh and ready to go

The aim of this write-up is to help those who have trouble getting out of bed and are looking for natural, body-friendly ways to start their day.

The most important thing we can do to wake up fresh is to fall asleep at an appropriate time.

  1. You must aim to wake up without an alarm. Sleep is important and your body does critical work while asleep. Let it do its job uninterrupted. Your job is to go to bed on time, without any distractions.
  2. Over a week, write down approximately when you fell asleep and when you woke up. This will tell you how many hours of sleep you need. As a healthy adult living a disciplined life, it should be about 7-8 hours. For teenagers, it might be a bit longer.
  3. Go to bed an hour before you should be sleeping in order to get your sleep quota.
  4. Listen to podcasts, do some self massage, read if you really want to (but not lying down!).
  5. Do this at the same time every day.
  6. As you wake up, sit up slowly. All movements should be slow to give the body time to readjust itself to the waking, upright state.
  7. Rub both hands together and place them on your face. This will help wake up your nerves.

The last three steps are particularly important for seniors, who often experience falls just after getting out of bed.
